In a developing country such as the Philippines, and amidst an increasingly global and competitive business environment, the
quality of human resources is key to our nation's progress. Yet, what do we know about Filipino workers and how do we harness
their capabilities in order to make our organizations successful? Perhaps due to our country's affinity to the West, it has
been fairly easy to transport Western management practices to the Philippine setting. Yet, these practices have been transplanted
with little data on whether or not they really work in our culture. Worse, there is a dearth of research that attempt to create
indigenous theories and models on how to manage the Filipino worker and organization. This concern provides the impetus for
this book.
In the first section of the book, we present researches that examine the psychology of the Filipino workers; their values,
motivations, sources of well-being and others. In the second half - we take an organizational perspective by presenting research
and case studies in human resource management. We hope that through these articles, heads of organizations, line managers
and HR professionals may be better informed, have a broader understanding of the Filipino workers and be able to more effectively
engage human resources in the Philippines.
